Research Management Associate/Research Manager (Fellowship)

GovAI was founded to help humanity navigate the transition to a world with advanced AI. One of our main pathways for accomplishing that mission is developing new talent to conduct research in AI governance or otherwise support the field. We are looking for a Research Management Associate to support those efforts.

As Research Management Associate, you will work closely with GovAI’s Head of Talent Development. You will support the preparation and execution of GovAI’s Seasonal Fellowships in London, UK – our flagship talent development programme – with the aim of taking primary responsibility for the Winter Fellowship in Q1 2026. You might also have the opportunity to support the design and execution of several other, new talent programmes.

Our aim is for the right candidate to grow within this role and to demonstrate the potential to step into a Research Manager position in the medium-term. We are also open to appointing exceptional candidates at the Manager level now.

Applications for this position are now open. The deadline for applications is Sunday 9 March 2025 at 23:59 GMT.

About the Team

GovAI was founded to help humanity navigate the transition to a world with advanced AI. Our first research agenda, published in 2018, helped define and shape the nascent field of AI governance. Our team and affiliate community possess expertise in a wide variety of domains, including AI regulation, responsible development and release practices, technical governance, agent governance, economics of AI, threat modelling, AI company corporate governance, US-China relations, and AI progress forecasting. GovAI researchers have closely advised decision makers in government, industry, and civil society. Our researchers have also published in top peer-reviewed journals and conferences, including Science, FAccT, and NeurIPS.

About the Fellowship

GovAI runs two three-month fellowships a year that bring together cohorts of about thirty people at our offices, enable them to work on supervised research projects, connect them to others in the space, and run seminars and expert Q&As for them. Many fellowship alumni have gone on to high-impact roles after GovAI. This includes roles in government in the US, the UK, and the EU; top AI companies, including DeepMind and Anthropic; top think tanks, including the Centre for Security and Emerging Technology and RAND; and top universities, including the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

  • Designing and executing on initiatives for engaging with our alumni; or
  • Supporting our Head of Talent Development with the design and execution of additional talent programmes. Examples could include relaunching GovAI’s online Policy Programme and/or a programme aimed at facilitating entry of mid- to late-career individuals to the field.
